When I ran across this site I was in awe of how the artist used the concept of the one page design portfolio. The one page porfolio has been all the rage lately and for the most part I’m not a huge fan of it. But when you combine it with Mootools and some nice illustration it is really a site! I would have love to have see a flash embed in eahc section displaying each type of work but the portfolio will still really nice with great quality work and smooth navigation.

When you first arrive at the site you see this button and click. This initiates your navigation through (or I guess down) the site.

In Between each section of the portfolio you emcounter lots of fun little illustrations, almost having the effect of a preloader. See for yourself here:

Do you think that a one page portfolio is the most effective way to showcase work as an artist?

I found this amazing and visually superb video at Made In Mundo. Made in Mundo is from the maker of Dot Dot Design. He recently created this Portuguese art and design blog and closed down the old one. It is wonderful to have so many international blogs in my Blogroll. It really just adds to the flavor:)
If you are a fan of short movies, artistic music videos, and video arts in general, I suggest you visit Vimeo. Vimeo is like a YouTube for artists and has a truly modern design. This video is wonderfully displaying the use of multiple image and video editing programs to create an ode to soccer (football) and politics. Funny, but a little depressing as well.
French Design Blog Design 2803 has formally changed names and it’s URL to Blog Déco Design
They are still in my Blogroll, just under a different name now. Go check it out and take a look at some great finds!

Jay Leno has announced that Dockers and NBC are holding a video contest right now to make your own Dockers Commercial. You can visit this site to learn more: www.nbc.com/Dockers. If you win, your commercial will be aired on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show”. The video that pauses and describes the moment such as “Work” and ‘Play” etc. is my favorite as of now. That should give you an idea of the competition. Honestly, it wouldn’t take much to win right now considering the quality of the videos that have entered the contest right now. I encourage you to enter your own video as it wouldn’t take a full scale production. Maybe some voice over and a little graphic design would do the trick. The exposure can be very valuable.Contests are always a great way for up and coming artists to gain recognition and attract clients. At the same time you always have to weigh out the risk Vs. rewards and read the rules of the contest. If you are an established video editor or director, having a commercial run on late night TV may not be the most appealing of prizes. If you are an aspiring director this could be your chance to shine!
While your at it go visit the Dockers Web site- Dockers

Sadly the Donnie Hoyle- You Suck at Photoshop tutorials have come to an end. If you are a fan of the series you will surely recognize the voice of recurring character Snatchbuckler. In this video he signs up and takes a tutorial for Peopleburg. I’m not exactly sure if this PeopleBurg thing is a real game or just a spoof on the popular online game- Second Life. There is a Peopleburg website, but it easily could have been put up by the makers of this series. It is only a splash that says Peopleburg is still in beta. If you know anything about this let me know. Either way it’s pretty funny. Check it out.
UPDATE: Upon looking up the whois info on the Peopleburg domain, I found out that it is registered to My Big Fat Brain, the producers of You Suck at Photoshop and this new show as well. Still funny though, although I don’t know why they didn’t make fun of actual Second Life. There is plenty of material there.

So if you enjoyed my previous post highlightings the portfolio of photographer James J. Lee, you will love reading this great interview I had with the artist himself! I was excited to find that he really took his time to answer the questions and was not in a rush to get it over with. After reading over the answers I feel like I gained more incite as to what drives him as well his unique outlook on life. So here it is:
Your name:
![]()
James J. Lee - just “J.Lee” to my photo friends.
Location:
Vincent, OH a little town on the West Virginia/Ohio line. I’ve just started freelancing in the mid-Ohio Valley after my wife got transferred here. Coming from a staff position at The Army Times, freelancing in this area presents a whole new set of challenges.
What type of artist would you say you are?
I hesitate to consider myself an “artist.” My first priority is to telling my subject’s stories. So, I consider myself a photojournalists or documentary photographer first and foremost. At what point photojournalism becomes art is always up for debate. I do attempt to be artful in my approach to making story telling images and would love it if all of my images could reach the level of “art.” By my standards, most fall short in that regard. In the editing process, I constantly remind myself that the story is more important than any individual image. At the end of the day, if I feel I’ve done my subjects justice by making images that honestly show who they are and give the viewer some insight that they might not have had without the pictures, I’m satisfied.
What originally inspired you to get into photography professionally?
I loved the process of finding good stories and making pictures as far back as high school. I got away from that for a while for what most would consider a “successful life.” I got a good education, a good job in the business world. I had my own home, the two cars, a boat, a beautiful wife and a Labrador retriever (that I still miss.) But, I was bored working a desk job from 8-5 during the week, spending my weekends on household and personal responsibilities. My marriage was in shambles and I was becoming very bitter. I found myself counting the days until my next break where I could spend a few hours doing something I loved, like getting out in that boat, but there never seemed to be enough time. I remember telling my father and fishing partner that there had to be more to life than this.
